Wood Fence Installation in Chester County, PA
Wood still has the warmest look of any fence, and it's often the most affordable way to enclose a big backyard. The trade-off is upkeep. Here's how cedar and pressure-treated pine compare, which styles work best and what keeps a wood fence standing straight.

Cedar or pressure-treated pine?
Pressure-treated pine is the budget choice and takes stain well once it dries out. Cedar costs more but resists rot and insects on its own, weighs less and fades to a soft silver if you leave it alone. Plenty of homeowners use treated posts in the ground with cedar boards on top to get the best of each.

Popular wood styles
Your choice of style changes how much privacy you get and how much lumber goes into the job:
- Solid stockade or dog-ear privacy
- Shadowbox, with boards alternating on both sides
- Board-on-board for full privacy without gaps
- Horizontal slat for a modern look
- Picket for front yards and cottage gardens
- Lattice or arbor tops over a gate

Posts, frost and wet soil
Most wood fences fail at the post. Holes dug deep enough to get below the frost line, gravel at the bottom for drainage and footings shaped to shed water all help posts last. In the heavy clay common across much of central Chester County, standing water around a post is what rots it, so drainage counts as much as depth.
Every post hole is excavation, so a PA One Call (811) request should go in before digging to get buried gas, electric and cable lines marked. Most installers file it; ask yours to confirm.

Upkeep to expect
Plan to clean and stain or seal a wood fence every few years to slow weathering. Boards may cup or check as they dry, which is normal. Keep mulch, soil and sprinkler spray off the bottom of the boards so they can dry out between rains.

What to ask installers
- Which lumber species and grade is quoted?
- Are posts treated for ground contact?
- Will the nice side face my yard or the neighbor's?
- What fasteners are used (galvanized or stainless)?
- Does the price include staining?
